“This is the first time we have trialled electric buses on a CAT route and I’m excited to see what commuters think about this new technology,” she said. “Trialling new, green technology is a great use of our public transport network, already one of the most environmentally friendly ways to get around Perth,” said Western Australian Transport Minister Rita Saffioti.
ELECTRIC VOLVO BUS TRIAL
When Volvo came to market with their hybrid buses in 2013, the two parties conducted a successful trial of the bus in Perth – which not only allowed Volvo to prove the concept, but grow hybrid bus sales across Australia. Introducing alternate technologies is nothing new for PTA and Volvo. PTA can access the variety of tools available to them and match the technology to the route and need,” said David Mead, Vice President Volvo Buses Asia Pacific. Volvo’s contract with PTA included a technology roadmap that allowed PTA to access diesel, self-charging electric and battery-electric vehicles over time. Our relationship with the PTA now spans over a decade and in years to come the city of Perth will indeed be a Volvo city with 100% of the bus fleet being Volvo. “We are excited to be partnering with PTA in Perth for our first electric buses in Australia. The Agreement includes provisions for the introduction of alternative powered vehicles into the public transport bus network when the technology became available in Volvo’s Australian product line. We have been successful in Europe and in the Americas with electrified public transport solutions and we are now looking forward to bring our first electric buses in to Australia,” says Håkan Agnevall, President of Volvo Buses.įour Volvo Electric Buses will be delivered to the PTA as part of the existing 900 Bus Supply Agreement between Volvo and Transperth which was signed in March 2019. “Volvo aims to be a leader in electrification and to be a partner for cities that wish to implement long-term sustainable public transport solutions for their inhabitants. Volvo Buses and the Public Transport Authority of Western Australia (PTA) are partnering to bring Volvo’s first ever Electric Buses to Australia. Mr Magnusson said: “What these results show is that the implementation of cleaner air practices and infrastructure is a priority for the public, key to this is the fundamental support from government level.Volvo Buses announces its first electric buses into Australia In order to better understand the potential for growth in demand for electric buses as a ‘sustainable public transport solution’, Volvo has conducted a survey of over 2,000 adults in the UK, which suggested that over half (52%) would support public transport-only areas in city-centres in order to address air pollution concerns.Ģ6% of those surveyed claimed that they thought that using electric buses would have the greatest reduction in emissions. As major cities look to improve air quality, reduce noise and future-proof its public transport, electric bus systems have great potential to be part of the solution.â€? Survey Mr Magnusson said: “We believe electric bus systems are the future of urban public transport, as environmentally clean and comfortable as a tram or light rail, but at a fraction of the overall cost. Volvo is also developing a new hybrid-electric double deck the B5HLC, which it claims will have the ability to operate with zero tail pipe emissions in electric mode for around 4.5 miles, between charges, and are expected to be completed within the next 12 months. “We believe electric bus systems are the future of urban public transport, as environmentally clean and comfortable as a tram or light rail, but at a fraction of the overall cost.â€? – Ulf Magnusson, Volvo Bus Corporationįour 7900 electric buses have also begun operating in the city of Differdange in Luxembourg this week. Charging is fully automated and takes between three and six minutes to complete. Opportunity charging takes place via a specialist overhead mast, which connects to the bus via a pantograph.

The vehicle manufacturer has recently delivered the first of nine fully electric 7900E single deck buses to the Yorkshire town of Harrogate, as part of a £2.25 million project with the Harrogate Bus Company. Speaking to during the Future Cities Innovation Summit last month, Mr Magnusson said that the company is continuing to develop its range of hybrid and fully electric buses in a bid to address the issue of air pollution in cities.
